With MVPs in hand, James’ legacy still needs titles

he sky’s the limit for this guy.Youhere and where hear that said all the time about LeBron James(notes), the Cleveland Cavaliers’ star forward who, in a public celebration Sunday at the University of Akron, was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 2009-10 for the second consecutive season. Just the otherflyingbird day, for instance, Cavs coach Mike Brown said: “He can continue to grow by leaps and bounds for as many years as he has left in this league. … The sky’s the limit for him.”Or assoftware life James himself said in accepting the award again in his hometown at a party open to all: “The way I approach the game, I know the sky’s the limit with an individual accolade like this.”You hear it so much—the sky’s the limit for this guy—you start to wonder if maybe it’s backwards.brave What if LBJ is the outlier, the one at the extreme, the force establishing the boundaries for all others and everything else, including the sky? As in:This guy’s the limit for the sky.Say ithonest fast and it starts to sound right.
The folks in the stands at Rhodes Arena Sunday—the “second home court” for James’ high school team at St. Vincent-St. Mary’s, given the overflow crowds drawn to SVSM’s too-small gym to see him then—simply went with the “M-V-P! M-V-P!” chant that, in this case, was as accurate and timely as it was redundant. You hate to surrender to a shoe company’s slogan but we are, in fact, all witnesses. To a multiple MVP winner, something only 11 other men in league annals can claim. To a back-to-back honoree, one of just 10 and the first since Steve Nash(notes) in 2005 and 2006. To a fellow who has a shot now to join Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell as the only players to win three in a row (MV3s, if you will) and who—if Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy is to be believed, rather than filtered as impassioned lobbying on behalf of his guy Dwight Howard(notes)—has a stranglehold on the Maurice Podoloff trophy for the next decade or more.“LeBron will win the MVP every year until he retires,” Van Gundy said this spring. “LeBron has to go into the year and basically lose the MVP. You guys have decided he’s the MVPhttp://forum.brighthand.com

history. The Magic will return Time is what you make of itto practice Thursday and try to avoid the kind of overconfidence and complacency that led to Cleveland’s downfall last season. That might be the only thing Van Gundy doesn’t seem concerned about.“I’ve said the one thing that I have real confidence in with our team is our mind set, our preparation and what we bring to the game in terms of energy andnever having to say you're sorry intensity will be very good,” he said. “If we get beat and when we get beat, it will be just because somebody out plays us. It’s not going to be because our guysThere is no crying aren’t ready to play. I really have confidence in that.”he motivated Magic have played lately like a team on a mission. They had blowout wins of 43, 14, 30 and 14 against Atlanta. Let's make things betterThey got Dwight Howard(notes) out of his foul-trouble funk, and they’ve locked opponents down defensively.till sometimes viewed as the irritating interloper thatImpossible made possible derailed a LeBron James(notes)-Kobe Bryant showdown in last year’s NBA Finals, Orlando enters the conference finals as the favorite to squash such talk again. The Magic haven’t lost since April 2 at San Antonio.I just think if we do the things we’ve done to get us to this point,” Howard said, “we should beat anybody.”ey’re also in better position to do so this year.Point guard Jameer Nelson(notes), sidelined the first three rounds last season with a right shoulder tear, is healthy again and playing like he was when he earned a spot on the All-Star team in 2009. The addition of Matt Barnes(notes) has given the Magic a gritty defender, and newcomer Jason Williams(notes) has anchored one of the deepest benches in the league as the backup point guard. For all the questions about how Vince Carter(notes) would replace Hedo Turkoglu(notes) in the lineup, that has been almost a non-issue through two rounds. Carter is in the conference finals for the first time in his career, averaging 16.9 points per game in the playoffs.Although perfection isn’t likely to last in the playoffs, striving for it is helping the Magic stay focused.“I’d like to go 16-0,” Carter said. “When you’re playing this well, you don’t want to lose. You want teams to always have fear in their minds and think to themselves, ‘We can’t beat these guys.’ You never want to have a nick in your armor.“Why not stay flawless if you can?”http://forum.notebookreview.com

Magic’s playoff-perfect record offers no guarantee

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—Team Sweep has more time to do some housecleaning.
Waiting around for their next celebrate our independence dayopponent again, about the only questions the playoff-perfect Orlando Magic face are when and where they’ll begin the Eastern Conference finals. Fourteen straight wins—including 8-0 in the postseason— have left the Magic beaming with confidence ahead of a process of self-discovery
another lengthy layoff. But the time off provides no assurance of continued success.“The one thing you have to understand about playoff basketball is you’ve got to get beyond the last game and the last series,” Magic coach Impossible made possibleStan Van Gundy said. “It has no meaning for the game or the series coming up, whatsoever. So you go in with good confidence, you get a little rest, but it will The relentless pursuit of perfectioncome down to how you play in the next series.”Orlando proved prior perfection—or imperfection—doesn’t guarantee anything last year, when it squeaked out two series before toppling the unbeaten Cleveland Cavaliers in the conference finals. Now Boston Intelligence everywhereleads the Cavaliers 3-2 in the best-of-seven series after winning 120-88 on Tuesday night, and Orlando is the team with time to wait and watch. The earliest Orlando will play again is Sunday, and it could be as long as next Tuesday—eight days between games. The Magic would have home-court advantage against Boston but would start on the road against Cleveland.Van Gundy gave his team two days off—again—after dusting aside Atlanta in the most lopsided four-game sweep in NBA playoff http://www.webhostingbuzz.com/forum

Letrich, Loyola plan on making long run

As Ashley Letrich approached her high school years, her father Craig encouraged his daughter to participate in two sports.Although she figure-skated and played volleyball, the former was not an option at Loyola Academy. So the summer before seventh grade at Chicago's St. Monica Academy, Letrich decided to try water polo despite never having been a competitive swimmer."I always liked swimming, and I hated running," the Edison Park native said.Letrich soon signed up to play for Loyola's club team. After a period of adjustment, she grew to love the sport. Now in her fourth varsity season, the senior is among the Ramblers' best players -- and a good bet to continue the sport in college as well. Letrich also played four years of volleyball at Loyola.
"I ended up quitting figure skating my freshman year so I could become better at water polo," said Letrich, who started skating at 3 years old. "And volleyball was fun, but I didn't see myself doing it after high school. Water polo I enjoy, and I keep getting better at it."
Last season, Letrich participated in the best campaign in program history as the Ramblers (24-11-1) finished fourth at the state tournament. The trophy was Loyola's first in girls water polo.
Letrich, who played all 36 games, was second on the team to Maeve O'Connor with 66 goals, scoring two at the state tournament. The Ramblers beat Stevenson 7-6 in the quarterfinals before losing to Naperville Central 10-5 in the semifinals and to Fremd 10-9 in the third-place game.
"We came into last season with high expectations, but no one thought about all that," Letrich said of the extended playoff run. "But once the state tournament started, we had nothing to lose."
Despite the loss of seven seniors, the Ramblers once again are expecting to make a long run. Web site Illpolo.com ranked the Ramblers No. 5 in the preseason. Loyola entered the week at 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the MCAC, and were ranked No. 7. St. Ignatius, also in the MCAC, stood at No. 1. Fenwick, last season's state champ, was No. 5.One of Loyola's regular-season losses was a 7-4 setback to Fremd. The Ramblers then posted an 11-4 win Friday over New Trier."I see us as an equal to last year at this point," Letrich said. "But I see us getting better as the season continues."In addition to being one of the best players in the pool, Letrich -- one of only three returning starters -- assumed a leadership role as a co-captain. She lists Santa Clara, the University of Redlands, Brown, Colorado State and Cal State at Monterey Bay as her top choices among the dozens of colleges showing interest. But Letrich has plenty left to do in high school.
The Ramblers were scheduled to play Resurrection on Monday, Oak Park-River Forest on Tuesday, Mother McAuley on Wednesday, and Evanston Thursday. Loyola will also face Sandburg on Saturday.
McAuley, Evanston and Sandburg all are ranked by Illpolo.com. The Ramblers will also be tested when they compete in Fenwick's tournament April 8-10.
"That's one we are looking forward to because there are so many of the top teams there," Letrich said.
